Transportation Systems | South Carolina Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity

The Transportation Systems Sector includes private and public organizations dedicated to the movement of people and the U.S. supply chain. This sector is organized into seven subsectors:

Aviation
Highways and motor carriers
Maritime transportation
Mass transit and passenger rail
Pipeline systems
Freight rail
Postal and shipping

In South Carolina, this sector includes:

52 airports
60,000+ miles of public roads
21,730 trucking companies based in South Carolina
A 2,400-mile statewide rail system
The Port of Charleston, along with two rail-served inland ports located in Dillon and Greer

SC CIC supports the Transportation Systems Sector by presenting on cybersecurity threats and emerging trends at events, such as the South Carolina Trucking Association’s Annual Conference and a national trucking cybersecurity conference hosted at Southeastern Freight Lines (SEFL).

The Transportation Systems Sector is also one of the sectors that was selected for the SC CIC collaboration with the students at The Citadel, where a custom threat profile was created that identified and analyzed the specific threats the sector faces.

SC Trucking Association (SCTA)

With the mission, “To advocate, educate, and collaborate for successful trucking operations in South Carolina,” the South Carolina Trucking Association is a nonprofit trade association serving the SC trucking industry. The SCTA supports its network of trucking companies located in South Carolina through information sharing, advocacy, collaboration, and educational opportunities.

South Carolina Aviation Association (SCAA)

The South Carolina Aviation Association promotes aviation in South Carolina by partnering with airports, industry groups, and aviation businesses. This organization provides networking, education, and collaboration opportunities for aviation professionals across South Carolina.

CISA’s Transportation Systems Sector webpage contains detailed information on what types of organizations belong to the Transportation Systems Sector in the U.S. along with federal plans for the sector (Transportation Systems Sector-Specific Plan) and all critical infrastructure in the country (National Infrastructure Protection Plan (NIPP)). Sector-specific plans address how the NIPP should be utilized while considering each sector’s unique perspective.

Information Sharing & Analysis Centers (ISACs)

Information Sharing & Analysis Centers (ISACs) help critical infrastructure professionals protect their infrastructure and employees from cybersecurity threats through the collection, analysis, and dissemination of threat information. ISACs help increase situational awareness across the critical infrastructure sectors through information sharing, partnerships, and networking opportunities.

U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Industry Cybersecurity Resource Center

A collaborative effort between the US Coast Guard, CISA, and MARAD, the Coast Guard Maritime Industry Cybersecurity Resource Center is a centralized location for cybersecurity resources for the Marine Transportation System. These resources include targeted information for vessels, facilities, waterways and navigation, and intelligence bulletins.
